We're Underway!

So, we've had our first meeting of the year! Thank you guys so much for coming out and contributing your ideas - it should be a productive (and jammin) new year. For those of you who couldn't make it out today: don't sweat it, there will be meetings every week which you can attend and there will be loads of fun events for you to come out to.

Just to give you guys a heads up of a few things coming up in the next week:

• The Devil Came on Horseback will be playing at 7 in the Norm theatre in the SUB on Tuesday. We'll be meeting in the office (the place where the meeting was held) at about 6:45 so we can go in together as a group. • Next Friday, we'll be doing a Pot Luck Dinner thingy for 7pm at 7th and Arbutus so we can all get to know each other a bit more. We'll iron out the details at the meeting next Thursday but remember to free up that time if you want to come chill with us.
• Our next meeting will be held next Thursday from 12:30 - 2:00 in the same room (through the brown doors on the eastern side of the main floor of the SUB).

Leaders?

Calling all people from the Caribbean/Africa and people who LOVE the Caribbean/Africa (aka everyone): It's a brand new year with the CAA and we're all pretty stoked about it! After a successful run last school year, we'll all ready to get back to work! First things first: recruiting new members. The CAA is open to anyone! Anyone at all. Our club booth will be at the Imagine Main Event Carnival which is being held on Tuesday, September 2nd 2008! You'll have lots of fun with the CAA - just take my word for it. Oh, and the photo? Those are your execs for the 2008-2009 school year.

Don't worry, we actually look a lot better than that.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH!

Hey Everyone!

It's February again and you know what that means.... the CAA is going at full steam to bring you a good time :)

On the Feb 15th 2008 (the unofficial first day of reading week), the CAA is holding an All ages Afro-Caribbean dance event with a great DJ and live drum band at the International House on UBC campus! All proceeds go to an organisation called Keep A Child Alive which provides ARV medication to children and their families in parts of Africa and India with HIV/AIDS. So come on down!





Feb 27th 2008: We are very excited to be screening a documentary called Thina Simunye (We Are Together). Winner of the "Audience Award" at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam and Amnesty International Film Festival.

"Life ias not been easy for 12 year old Slindile and her friends at the Agape Orphanage in South Africa, but their young voices ring loud and clear. As they come to terms with a series of painful setbacks, including the loss of loved ones to AIDS, their spirit stays strong and they sing their way along a journey they could only dream of. Filmed over three years, We Are Together (Thina Simunye) is a story about sorrow, joy, and the strength of the human spirit."









For all you literaries out there, there will be a Pan African Book Display at the Faculty of Law building on Feb 28th 2008 at 430pm. It will feature art work by David George and will include readings from exceptional books by professors on campus as well as the authors themselves! More details soon!!

Back 2 School Fundraiser at Au Bar Saturday October 13th

It's that time of year again, so to welcome new members we are hosting a social mixer and fundraiser on Saturday October 13th at Au Bar (http://www.aubarnightclub.com/). The location is 674 Seymour Street in downtown Vancouver. All proceeds will go toward this year's upcoming projects, including World Aids Day, Africa Awareness Month events, and support for African elementary schools.

A member of the celebrated Marley sibling group The Melody Makers since the age of seven, the Grammy winning producer, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist has also been the driving creative force behind the music of his brothers. Stephen's production, performance and writing credits recently earned him two Grammys-giving him a total of five: more than any other Marley family member or reggae artist in history.

Originally from Somalia, but now based in Toronto, this skilled MC/spoken word poet brings an enormous dose of realness and urgency to the hip-hop world. Justice and Reconciliation Project

UBC's Liu Institute hero-in-residence Erin Baines, who's been incredibly active in Northern Uganda for over four years and has started up an NGO working with young mothers and former child soldiers called the Justice and Reconciliation Project (JRP). Siobhan Barker: A pinch of time, a dash of flavour and large quantities of attitude-- not your Mama's regular recipe. Fiction or Not, 'No Strings Attached' La Luna prez does 'Spring Rites' small to Global Fest large. Flowing in French or English, Siobhan brings it out of the pot and into the fire.

Roger Blenman, once Bajan now Canadian, blends and mixes words. He is a published poet, a playwright, and an educator.

Fred Booker's "Adventures in Debt Collection" contains deftly written tales that take the reader from the offices of over-extended capitalists to the driveways of the payment-missing masses, and all points in-between. Fred's short story collection has just been released by Commodore Books.

Lesley Ewen is a Jamaican/Scottish actor, writer, director, producer, and video maker living in Vancouver. Some of her work chronicles a journey of self-discovery and an eventual synthesis of hybrid ethnic identity.

Tess Kingston's words come from a place of soul, faith, and survival. A poet and also an accomplished visual artist, Tess, along with Roger, organizes Vancouver's Black Writers' Network.

Dr. Michelle La Flamme is an AFRO-NDN performer and educator. She has written plays "White, Dark and Bittersweet" with Mercedes Baines (1994), "Mixed Messages (2001) and HAYWIRE (2007). This monologue, SOMA TEXT is an excerpt from her recent play, HAYWIRE which documents two mixed blood families who leave Alberta for the fame and fortune of the West Coast only to find that leaving their extended families makes them vulnerable to racism and they discover that living without kin causes things to truly go haywire.

'We Have a Voice; An Anthology of African and Caribbean Student Writing in BC'

Join us for the exciting launch for We Have a Voice. This new anthology features writings by students exploring the academic and personal issues relating to both the African and Caribbean continents and/or transnational experiences. The book sheds light on the experiences of BC's past, present and future students of this descent. All proceeds from sales will go toward a new African and Caribbean Studies resource library at UBC.

The official Anthology launch takes place Thursday February 15 at 7:30pm in Vancouver Public Library's Central branch on 350 West Georgia Street. Admission is free and all are welcome
