FEBRUARY 7TH!!! It's almost here...

The evening will begin with a background on the African Studies Program here at UBC. A representative of UBC’s Africa Awareness Initiative will be discussing the start and growth of the current Minor program and the work being done to develop an eventual African Studies Major in the future.

Following ...we have a current student in the African Studies Program voicing their experiences and frustrations. A fourth-year student,Kait Bolongaro, tells us a bit about UBC’s underdeveloped African Studies Minor Program.

The keynote speaker is a recent Master’s Degree Graduate and the author of “The Only Black Student”: LULL MENGESHA, joining us from Seattle, WA to share an interactive and relatable presentation promising something everyone can learn from. He’ll be discussing the experiences minorities in a post-secondary environment may come across, as well as offering advice and tips on overcoming obstacles. Motivated, knowledgeable, and funny, you won’t want to miss Lull!

First up, we have M.I.A: Minorities in Action. Lull Mengesha, a University of Washington Alumni, will be discussing his self-published a book The Only Black Student. The book touches on his experiences as a minority in a post-secondary environment. Knowledgeable, relatable and hilarious – you don’t want to miss out on this amazing speaker!

Our kick off event this semester is an open mic night celebrating Mama Africa on Thursday, January 20th. This is in collaboration event with Africa Awareness Initiative's Conference Week 2011. Whether you are a poet, musician, singer or dancer, you are invited to share your talent with us. If you want to see some excellent artistic presentations, there will be several feature performers including slam poets, singers and instrumentalists who all share a love of Africa and her diaspora. This event is free and takes place at Koerner's Pub (don't forget to bring 2 pieces of ID). Doors open at 6:30 and event starts at 7 pm sharp!

Happy 2011! Welcome to a new semester with CAA. It's a new year and the Executives have been working hard to bring you exciting and engaging events in the upcoming months.

Our first event of the year will be a collaboration with Africa Awareness Initiative during the Conference week.

In February, our first member's meeting and movie night. will be on February 9th with a club night at Shine to follow! We will also be hosting five exciting events to celebrate Black History month and in particular black history in Vancouver, including an event about Hogan's Alley and an international speaker (it's a surprise).

There is also our Caribbean Connection Week in the last week of March. We are having an event each day including a restaurant night at the Reef, a salsa dancing night, and of course Carnival, our year end celebration which is the hottest party on campus.

There will also be elections in April, so if you are interested in becoming an Exec for the 2011/2012 year, make sure you get involved with us.

If you are interested in getting involved with the CAA, don't hesitate to stop by our office located in the SUB 111C during our weekly Monday meetings at 2pm or come out to the many events we are planning this semester!

Come out to African Cultural Night for an evening of cultural enlightenment! There will be African food, an African fashion show, a silent auction (WONDERFUL photography for sale) and proceeds will go to Mother of Peace, African folklore, and DRUMMING!

We're Underway!

So, we've had our first meeting of the year! Thank you guys so much for coming out and contributing your ideas - it should be a productive (and jammin) new year. For those of you who couldn't make it out today: don't sweat it, there will be meetings every week which you can attend and there will be loads of fun events for you to come out to.

Just to give you guys a heads up of a few things coming up in the next week:

The Devil Came on Horseback will be playing at 7 in the Norm theatre in the SUB on Tuesday. We'll be meeting in the office (the place where the meeting was held) at about 6:45 so we can go in together as a group. Next Friday, we'll be doing a Pot Luck Dinner thingy for 7pm at 7th and Arbutus so we can all get to know each other a bit more. We'll iron out the details at the meeting next Thursday but remember to free up that time if you want to come chill with us.
Our next meeting will be held next Thursday from 12:30 - 2:00 in the same room (through the brown doors on the eastern side of the main floor of the SUB).

Calling all people from the Caribbean/Africa and people who LOVE the Caribbean/Africa (aka everyone): It's a brand new year with the CAA and we're all pretty stoked about it! After a successful run last school year, we'll all ready to get back to work! First things first: recruiting new members. The CAA is open to anyone! Anyone at all. Our club booth will be at the Imagine Main Event Carnival which is being held on Tuesday, September 2nd 2008! You'll have lots of fun with the CAA - just take my word for it. Oh, and the photo? Those are your execs for the 2008-2009 school year.

Don't worry, we actually look a lot better than that.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH!

Hey Everyone!

It's February again and you know what that means.... the CAA is going at full steam to bring you a good time :)

On the Feb 15th 2008 (the unofficial first day of reading week), the CAA is holding an All ages Afro-Caribbean dance event with a great DJ and live drum band at the International House on UBC campus! All proceeds go to an organisation called Keep A Child Alive which provides ARV medication to children and their families in parts of Africa and India with HIV/AIDS. So come on down!

Feb 27th 2008: We are very excited to be screening a documentary called Thina Simunye (We Are Together). Winner of the "Audience Award" at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam and Amnesty International Film Festival.

"Life ias not been easy for 12 year old Slindile and her friends at the Agape Orphanage in South Africa, but their young voices ring loud and clear. As they come to terms with a series of painful setbacks, including the loss of loved ones to AIDS, their spirit stays strong and they sing their way along a journey they could only dream of. Filmed over three years, We Are Together (Thina Simunye) is a story about sorrow, joy, and the strength of the human spirit."

For all you literaries out there, there will be a Pan African Book Display at the Faculty of Law building on Feb 28th 2008 at 430pm. It will feature art work by David George and will include readings from exceptional books by professors on campus as well as the authors themselves! More details soon!!

UBC's Liu Institute hero-in-residence Erin Baines, who's been incredibly active in Northern Uganda for over four years and has started up an NGO working with young mothers and former child soldiers called the Justice and Reconciliation Project (JRP). Siobhan Barker: A pinch of time, a dash of flavour and large quantities of attitude-- not your Mama's regular recipe. Fiction or Not, 'No Strings Attached' La Luna prez does 'Spring Rites' small to Global Fest large. Flowing in French or English, Siobhan brings it out of the pot and into the fire.

Roger Blenman, once Bajan now Canadian, blends and mixes words. He is a published poet, a playwright, and an educator.

Fred Booker's "Adventures in Debt Collection" contains deftly written tales that take the reader from the offices of over-extended capitalists to the driveways of the payment-missing masses, and all points in-between. Fred's short story collection has just been released by Commodore Books.

Lesley Ewen is a Jamaican/Scottish actor, writer, director, producer, and video maker living in Vancouver. Some of her work chronicles a journey of self-discovery and an eventual synthesis of hybrid ethnic identity.

Tess Kingston's words come from a place of soul, faith, and survival. A poet and also an accomplished visual artist, Tess, along with Roger, organizes Vancouver's Black Writers' Network.

Dr. Michelle La Flamme is an AFRO-NDN performer and educator. She has written plays "White, Dark and Bittersweet" with Mercedes Baines (1994), "Mixed Messages (2001) and HAYWIRE (2007). This monologue, SOMA TEXT is an excerpt from her recent play, HAYWIRE which documents two mixed blood families who leave Alberta for the fame and fortune of the West Coast only to find that leaving their extended families makes them vulnerable to racism and they discover that living without kin causes things to truly go haywire.

Join us for the exciting launch for We Have a Voice. This new anthology features writings by students exploring the academic and personal issues relating to both the African and Caribbean continents and/or transnational experiences. The official Anthology launch takes place Thursday February 15 at 7:30pm in Vancouver Public Library's Central branch on 350 West Georgia Street. Admission is free and all are welcome

“Searching for African Solutions to Contemporary Challenges” is the theme of this year’s Africa Awareness Symposium at UBC (January 22-27, 2007). MOA is co-hosting the opening event, which features a choral rendition of “Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika” and a keynote speaker. In association with the exhibition, The Village is Tilting: Dancing AIDS in Malawi, MOA is proud to present “Perceptions of Africa: A Dialogue,” three evenings of presentations, conversation, and reflection on themes of Africa, AIDS, and representation of Africa by the West.

The African continent, rich in diversity, culture, and complexity, is often viewed in a context of despair and desperation that excludes the other multifaceted realities that exist in a continent of over fifty countries. Through this Dialogue, we will review some of the ways in which African countries are represented in the west, look at ways in which African countries are finding their own solutions in addressing AIDS, and create a forum where the public can participate in reviewing, responding to, and reflecting on these themes.

Along with African students, presenters include Michael Gondwe, National Education Coordinator for the Museums of Malawi; Juliet Tembe, Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees of The AIDS Support Organization; and Douglas Curran, photographer, collector, and guest curator of The Village is Tilting: Dancing AIDS in Malawi. This is the second in the Museum’s annual Global Dialogue series, following on our very successful “Dialogue of Cities” event last June.

African Christmas Funfair for Kids

We plan the event to feature Kente Claus again (with gifts for the Children), Masquerade shows (an integral part of West African Christmas Season), African Food and Snacks, African Games and Tales by Moonlight. The event is open to all kids, African and non-African alike, but we want it to be a bit of an experience of an African Christmas that the kids will love.

Hello all beautiful women!

So, at some point or another, I have talked to most of you about a dance class that I have been meaning to start and that I am finally doing!!! For those I haven’t talked to about it, basically this is the just- I have noticed over my years in North America that we as women are not in touch with your bodies enough.. you know busy life style-'go getter' women (which is fantastic) however, we have forgotten how to simply be women. You know, sexy and sexual-its almost 'tabou' here, but it is so important to keep loving ourselves and mostly loving our bodies- with the pressures of society constantly making us insecure "my butt too big" "my hips are too wide" "my boobs are too small" "my left ear is bigger than my right"... I mean you know what I am talking about? Anyway, enough rambling, basically you can call this dance class your 'dancing yoga' it will be a safe space for women only, to get a great workout and learn some sexy moves to all sorts of music. It’s all about letting go and having fun!

WHEN: Tuesdays from 6-7, starting on October 31^ST (I know it starts on Halloween but I was too excited to prolong it anymore and it’s early enough that if you wanna go out, you still can! )

WHERE: the Forufera Centre, 505 Hamilton Street. ( great place-just one great room with a great feel-so its so not a big intimidating studio)
